Intentional Reading

I do most of my reading during my breaks at work. Almost none at home. And I want to change that. But when I’m home at night, I’m tired, my brain is both seeking dopamine and rest, my mom wants to watch TV, and I have forgotten that books exist.

First, I need to be clear about my intentions to read at night. Ask not to be interrupted and that my time be respected.

Next, I need to figure out a way to remind myself of what I want to read. It might work best if I have print books next to where I sit so I can see them. I can read something different at work.

I need to not make any kind of plan or schedule that’s too demanding or restrictive. That just leads to guilt and avoidance.

Collections of essays or short stories or books with short chapters may work best. I’m thinking of:

  • The Big Book of Cyberpunk (I have the ebook and my library has the print version. It’s huge and I’m over half done with it)
  • The Portable Feminist Reader
  • The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories
  • Anarchism and Other Essays by Emma Goldman
  • Whatever the title of the EA Poe collection I have is

I want to spend more time with tarot (and Lenormand), too, but I’m hesitant to say how. Again, I don’t want to set a goal that ends up discouraging me. But it is time to tackle some classic tarot texts.

Can’t forget zines! I have so many and I’ve read so few of them. The other night I read a couple and made some notes about them. I want to keep this up so I have a record of what I’ve read and can decide what to keep and what can be shared.
